Title A name given to the resource The Rhetoric of Power: Obamanics Description An account of the resource Rhetoric (Greek word for speaker) was conceived in ancient times (around 500BC) to inform, persuade, entertain and motivate audiences. Like all art, rhetoric was, in those ancient times, mainly performed by those with a gift for public speaking who used the art to persuade and sway audiences to the side of rulers. Indeed, rhetoric and its audience-effect on world or African politics and public speaking tended to be unobtrusive because it didn‘t seem to matter much to many a people how public or political speeches were delivered. What appeared germane to them was whether a speech was either delivered or not. But all that changed when the audacious Barack Hussein Obama II (son of a recent immigrant from Kenya to the United States of America) emerged as a presidential hopeful for the Democratic Party in the build-up to the 2008 presidential election in the United States of America. Barack Obama told his story with exceptional skill, weaving it around the achievements of such emblematic Black personalities as Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., Malcom X (in Americas recent history) and the venerated Nelson Mandela of South Africa. His ability to dig deep into his rhetorical reserve to sway even the most apathetic of American voters to his advantage clearly underpinned his extraordinary personality which was as captivating as it was magical. That was the Obama-effect! Text Any textual data included in the document Born Daniel Akpan Ekanem, our Inaugural Lecturer, Prof Daniel Ekanem Ama-Abasi hails from Ikot Ifot-Ono in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. His parents were Late Chief Akpan Ekanem and Late Madam Obot Akpan Ekanem (Nee Obot Obong Udo Etok.) The last of fourteen (14) children, Prof Ama-Abasi attended P.C.N. Primary School, Ono; Nigerian Christian Secondary School, Ukpom Abak; Ibiono Community High School, Edem Urua, and University of Calabar, Calabar, for his first, second and highest degrees. He also had a short Course (Ohio Programme of Intensive English) at Ohio University, Athens, U.S.A. After the mandatory one-year N.Y.S.C. at Government Secondary School, Gwarzo in Kano State, in 1985-86, our Inaugural Lecturer had a stint in International Institute for Tropical Agriculture.(IITA), Ibadan. He had another stint as Secondary School teacher with Akwa Ibom State Secondary Education Board, until 1991, when he was appointed Junior Research Fellow by the University of Calabar. He rose through the ranks to become Professor in 2015, and serves in that position till date. Between 1991 and now, he has also been Visiting Scholar to University of Massachusetts, Amherst, USA, Visiting and Adjunct Scholar, Akwa Ibom State University, Obio Akpan Campus, Visiting and Adjunct Scholar, University of Uyo, Uyo, among others.
