English for Pre-Degree Students 1: A Workbook

The spoken and written communication in English of many a university student sadly reveals a less than satisfactory understanding of the use of language, particularly for academic purposes. The structural, lexical and phonological difficulties faced by the student all clearly point to an insufficient grasp and command of the most essential elements- parts of speech, phrases, clauses and other components of the sentence- and of course the basic aspects of the sound system. Such poor performance in the language has, undoubtedly, a direct correlation with the general performance in the student‘s course area. In other words, a good command of English at both spoken and written levels plays a key part in the overall performance of the student. It is against this background that Pre-Degree English is welcome as a foundational text aimed at equipping the university freshman for the task of academic expression and general purposes in the language. In its expansive breadth on the fundamentals of grammar and detailed explanation and examples, the text is designed to help the student overcome the challenges of understanding key ingredients for effective use of English. In this direction, phrases, their types and functions as used in context are thoroughly discussed as well as idiomatic usages which make language flowery and beautiful
