EDUCATION TO PROTECT TOMORROW,” THE ROLE OF THE NURSE IN DIABETIC FOOT CARE

Diabetes also called diabetes mellitus is a group of diseases that result in too much sugar in the blood (high blood glucose). According to WHO diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. Diabetes mellitus is a heterogenous group of metabolic disorders characterized by hyperglycemia due to absolute or relative deficit in insulin production or action. Chronic hyperglycemia of diabetes mellitus is associated with end organ damage, dysfunction and failure, including the retina, kidney, nervous system, heart and blood vessels. • Diabetes can lead to impairment/loss of eyesight, kidney, coronary heart disease, neuropathy etc., if it is uncontrolled. • Currently, there is no cure for diabetes and the healthcare providers have over the years made effort to put policies and strategies (promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative) to manage and care for our clients. In furtherance of best practice, we need to pay attention to another aspect of care -the Diabetic Foot Care Service which requires skills, foot care equipment for evidence-based diagnosis, effective and efficient delivery of care
